Ian's

'Naff' Page of Computer Pics!

This page is a bit confused & disorganized at the moment - I originally started this web site as an attempt to find and regain contact with someone I had lost touch with some years ago and only added the computer pics page in order to make the site more 'interesting' to Google, Metacrawler and the other search-engines and improve the chances of getting it indexed. However, I still haven't gotten round to re-organizing the site yet, so as a result, the computer pictures are still on a separate page.

The page is also rather plain in appearance, as at the time, getting it online as soon as possible was more important than worrying about what it looked like and anyway, learning web page design and getting-to-grips with the niceties of 'Dreamweaver MX' was not something I was particularly interested in! - BTW, the grey page-colour has been used so as to act as a neutral background for the pictures. So....

About me: (Self-indulgent bit - probably of no interest to anyone but myself - may take it out later!)

Picture of me taken in Feb 2004

I am 41 years of age (as of October 11 2003), and currently live on the Kent coast, in the South-East of England.

I went to Sandwich County Secondary School from 1977 to 1979.

In 1985-6 I tutored evening class students in Computer Literacy, at Shepway Adult Education Centre in Folkestone, Kent, UK.

I did two years (1993-5) as a mature student at Canterbury Christ Church College, doing a BA/BSc Ext. in Science & Information Technology, before dropping-out due to financial dire straits.

My main interests (apart from the obvious!) are:

Computers: I got interested in computers in 1981 (when I was 19) and built a 'Tangerine Microtan 65' microcomputer from a kit and taught myself 6502 assembler and BASIC programming on it.

I still have my Microtan

Microtan enthusiasts can open (or download - right-click & 'Save Target As..') a PDF version of Jim Rew's 1981 'Microtan Companion' here:

Flying: I have been interested in flying all my life (well, since I can remember!) and was an Air Cadet in 2513 (New Romney) Squadron, Air Training Corps, 1975-77, and did some flying from RAF Manston on DHC-1 Chipmunks.(below)

Picture of an ex-RAF Manston Chipmunk F-AZXM

At Manston, as the aircraft were all RAF machines, we had to wear seat-type parachutes. These fit tightly up against the backside, and in the aircraft you sit on them where they act as rather hard seat cushions. As it was inconvenient to put them on in the aircraft, a dining room chair was provided and was positioned by the aircraft with the parachute placed on it. The Cadet then sat on the 'chute and the straps were done up TIGHTLY. (the straps of the harness passed between the legs and HAD to be tight, otherwise, if you ever subsequently had to use the parachute, the jerk of it opening would cause you to 'do yourself an injury') Unfortunately, when the straps were properly tight it became almost impossible to stand-up or walk properly. The sight of a would-be aviator proceeding to the aircraft almost bent-double, clambering up onto the wing root of the Chipmunk, and then managing somehow to get himself into the cockpit, was quite amusing. Naturally, it was less funny when it was your turn!

RAF Manston was (the airfield is still there, but it's no longer an RAF Station) situated in the South-East of Kent, and we used to fly over Dover Castle, which was even more impressive when seen fron the air.

The Chipmunk was designed by de Havilland Canada as a replacement for the Tiger Moth and first flew in 1946. It was a nice little aeroplane.
