Map of Northern
and Central Burma (Myanmar)
The map depicted is the actual map (on orange coloured silk) issued to Chindit
troops during campaigns in Burma.
My very good friend Harry Winstanley, loaned the map to me for purposes of
illustration. Harry and I went through the war together, and have remained
close friends ever since.
The Map
The map is more commonly known as the 'Panic Map', a name probably derived
as a consequence of training. Training which advised that at a time of crisis,
i.e. perhaps when separated from the main column or group, or lost deep in
the jungle, and to avoid panic, one should keep calm, examine the map, and
work out the best course of action and direction to return to the last stopping
point.
It didn't work out way, panicking was easier.
The map was often worn around the neck as a sweatband. This orange square
was also laid out (in numbers) on the jungle floor to attract the attention
of aircraft.
