KILIM WEAVING AND INDIGO DYEING WORKSHOP
FULL COURSE
A week of guidance in the art of flat weave rug making
with weaver and textile designer Pie Chambers-Sethi.
Day 1 Arrival in time for tea - informal discussions about kilims, use of colour, choice of design etc. Either a
new indigo vat will be prepared or an old one will be revived. In any case there will be instructions
on how to prepare one.
Day 2 Preparation of warp and application onto the upright Navajo loom. Dyeing of the yarn in various
tones of indigo and/or iron rust.
Day 3 Commencement of weaving on the loom - getting to understand the various techniques.
Day 4 The whole day spent weaving - there will be time for walks at lunchtimes and in the evenings.
Day 5 Your weaving on Day 5 will be radically faster and you will feel more optimistic about finishing your
piece of work. There is always a panic on Day 4(halfway) that the work will not get finished!
Day 6 Completion of piece - finishing technigues.
Day 7 Departure by 12 noon with finished rug.
KILIM WEAVING REFRESHER COURSE
Day 1 Arrival at tea time - the usual preliminary discussions - perhaps photos of previous work
would be brought and shown.
Day 2 Warp has previously been prepared for each loom so weaving commences immediately - more
difficult techniques can be attempted.
Day 3 Weaving continues to completion. On these short courses the use of a narrower warp is recommended
so many different techniques are achieved.
Day 4 Finishing techniques - departure before 12 noon.
Non residential participants are very welcome to stay for supper each evening at a cost of £
so to have the opportunity to work on in the evening.
On one of the evenings we will go out for supper to the local inn and listen
to Jazz/Blues by local musicians.
A large Navajo style loom and other equipment will be provided for the use of each student and yarn is available
from the tutor at cost.
A number of books and publications on kilims and various textiles are available for browsing and there will
be some examples of kilims and decorative textiles on display - by courtesy of TULSI ORIENTAL
TEXTILES, Frome, Somerset.
