Shibori
Tutor: Pye Chambers-Sethi

Shibori is the Japanese word meaning a variety of ways of embellishing textiles by shaping cloth and securing it before dyeing.

Potential for creating designs in textiles is found even in the physical properties of cloth. The simple fact that cloth tighly compressed into wrinkles and folds assists the penetration of dye can be seen as an opportunity to let the pliancy of textiles speak in making design and pattern.

The designs created by Shibori techniques all share a softness of outlineand spontaneity of effect. This latter is Shibori's own special magic made possible by exploiting the beauty of the fortuitous things that happen when dye enters cloth.

Join an exciting three day workshop in Cumbria where many of the Shibori techniques will be explored and the results illustrated using an indigo vat.
