Back in the early 1980s the Bath 4 year course was rather unusual - only a handful of educational establishments then offered comparable courses. The format was 4 years of full-time study, with defined industrial periods in the 3 summer vacations. These periods were spent with a sponsoring company, though the basic content was defined as part of the university curriculum.

The aim of the course was to supplement the usual technical fare offered by an engineering B.Sc. degree with other skills necessary in industry but not included in a technical degree.
