About the Bath 4 Year Course

Back in the early 1980s the Bath 4 year course was rather unusual - only a handful of educational establishments then offered comparable courses. The format was 4 years of full-time study, with defined industrial periods in the 3 summer vacations. These periods were spent with a sponsoring company, though the basic content was defined as part of the university curriculum.

The aim of the course was to supplement the usual technical fare offered by an engineering B.Sc. degree with other skills necessary in industry but not included in a technical degree.

The additional topics covered included:

• group dynamics and workplace psychology

• additional accounting and management studies

• a large group project, undertaken as if in industry with all the marketing, commercial and financial factors simulated.

• defined content for industrial placements to ensure exposure to the management, accounting, marketing and production activities in industry in addition to the normal technical/engineering content

• a few additional technical subjects
