Polyphonic Ringtones for the Nokia 3510 mobile.

The Nokia 3510 mobile phone is capable of playing two types of MIDI files. The General midi format  which is the most common type and a new type of file called "Scalable Polyphonic" (SP MIDI for short). With SP MIDI a mobile that that can not handle multiple channels ( Nokia 3510 has only 4 sound channels), instruments are removed in a special manner allowing the song to continue to play without loosing all of the melody. SP MIDI allows the composer to create a 16 channel composition that that will play on a device with only 4 channels yet still sound close to the original composition.

The Nokia 3510 can only play four notes (4 sound channels simultaneously), this is probably the biggest limitation. If you attempt to play more than four channels, your Nokia will ignore these. This can often result in no audible sound from your phone.  Another limitation is the small selection of instruments / percussion that can be played.  Unlike the General Midi standard, the Nokia only supports 29 instruments and 14 percussion effects.  These limitations mean that probably 99% of all midi files found on the internet will not play on your Nokia without some major tweaking. Even with these limitations, great results can be achieved.  Follow the links below to see how a file can be downloaded to your NOKIA !.  Follow the instructions to create your own polyphonic ringing tones.
