The mosaics were created between 1983 and 1989. In the early ones I looked very
much to Byzantium for inspiration, but right from the start, sought a freer less
formal mode. Thus the images were composed of chipped ceramic tiles rather than
squares, were of different sizes and different widths,

In the later ones I worked from paintings or coloured drawings rather than from
black and white sketches, I used some hand painted, specially commissioned tiles.
