TSW Long Version (1982)

New Years Day 1982, and TSW takes over as the local ITV contractor. A memorable ident first shown at midnight into the US sitcom "The Two Of Us". All the outrageousness of ATV's legendary Zoom, though rarely shown on the network.

TSW Short Version (1982)

A shorter version of the above ident; it always appeared before Today South West and programmes supplied to the network. By 1985 it replaced the full ident completely.

TSW Start-up (1982)

TSW's short-lived startup tried to emulate Westward's final effort, with sheep pens shaped into the company's name. On the left is the original broadcast version with the Ed Welch instrumental "Welcome To TSW". The alternative - never transmitted - has different music.

Many thanks to The Continuity Booth.

TSW The Man Behind The Logo (2001)

So what exactly was that logo meant to be? In this clip from "40 Years Of ITV", its creator Paul Honeywill explains the thinking behind the symbol.

TSW Promo (1982)

TSW promise a new approach to local news in this film, first shown during TSW's Opening Show.

TSW News Promo (1982)

Not really a news promo at all. Click here to watch Ed Welch and his players record the theme music to "Today South West".

TSW Sports Promo (1982)

A promo for TSW's sports coverage, with particular emphasis on the Saturday afternoon results programme.

TSW (1985)

This ident replaced the original versions around May 1985. Though technically impressive for its time, the ident was slower in pace and lacked the boldness of its predecessor. A brass band plays the accompanying fanfare.

 TSW Closedown 1 (1982)

The end of a typical day's programmes from the early days of TSW. Note that the National Anthem sequence here is the same one used by Westward.

TSW Weather and Shipping (1984)

Serving a region famed for its maritime activities, TSW signed off each night with the shipping forecast. Perhaps the only region in the ITV network to do so?

TSW Closedown 2 (1984)

Closedowns varied enormously at TSW. Sometimes a simple "goodnight" and straight into the National Anthem. Other times we were in for a surprise; here Ian Stirling leaves us with tomorrow's menu and - wait for it - an extended version of the TSW ident theme!

TSW Start-up (1985)

A typical morning menu which preceded the start of programmes in the mid-80s. TSW used a varied and tasteful selection of music with these captions. From 1986 a news summary was shown at 9:25am.

TSW Start-up (1986)

Preceding the above menu would be a greeting like this - recorded on a different day.

TSW Schools (1986)

Most regions used the network slide to close the day's Schools programmes - TSW used this caption. Until 1984, it was also shown in place of the slide during the first interval of the morning.

TSW Closedown 3 (1988)

Jennifer Gavin shuts up shop for the last time on 1st September 1988, with 24-hour TV taking over the next day. Better set the VCR for the final test card!

TSW Night Time (1988)

And this is what closedown made way for. Programmes through to 6am, adding to the repeats tally. Most junctions came from Granada, but this ident popped up just as frequently. Left: the promo for TSW Night Time.

TSW ITV Generic - unused (1989)

ITV's first attempt at a corporate look came in 1989, with each region having its own version of the generic ident. TSW (and several other regions) refused to adopt the new look as it did not fit in with their sofa-driven image. But if they had, here's what viewers would have seen.

 TSW Four Seasons (1989 onwards)

TSW's seasonal idents replaced the standard one before each programme (following the in-vision announcement). Each ran for three-month intervals. There were also Christmas and New Year versions.

TSW Community Unit (1991)

TSW introduced a seperate ident for community programmes in the early 90s. The logo also appeared on endcaps.

TSW Closing announcement (31.12.92)

It was a moment TSW hoped would never come. A legal challenge to the franchise loss failed so, a few minutes before midnight on New Year's Eve, Ruth Langsford and Ian Stirling say goodbye for the last time.
