Westward (1961)

Westward's first ident from 1961 begins with a still of a real galleon, which fades into the design left. This ident was most recently seen in Carlton's "Century" series.

Westward Start-Up (1960s)

Until the introduction of colour, this is how Westward would open up each afternoon, with its own version of the Picasso card. The heraldic music comes from Ron Goodwin; the clip is reconstructed.

Westward (Mid 1960s)

The elusive second ident has finally been captured by TV Ark! The model Golden Hind was to feature in all subsequent symbols.

Westward (Late 1960s)

Two differences seperate this ident from its predecessor - firstly, the change of typeface. Also, the ship spins from right to left, not vice versa.

Westward (1972)

South West viewers are always treated like poor relations when it comes to TV - we had to wait until 1972 for colour! Westward launched a new ident, based on the last one, to celebrate this new era.

Westward (Late 1970s)

The same ident was used from the introduction of colour (1972) until 1981, but in the late 70s the nautical fanfare was replaced by the jingle heard here.

Westward (1970s)

Westward's distinctive clock incorporated both analogue and digital displays. It looks a bit like one of those clocks you might find at your local bank! The sliced box design was also used in Westward's promotional captions.

Westward Start-up 1 (1970s)

There were three versions of WTV's magnificent opening film, used in the 1970s and early 80s. This is the first. The accompanying music is a fantastic score called "An English Suite", composed by Paul Lewis.

Westward Start-up 2 (29.03.1981)

A longer, more dramatic film featuring RAF Chivenor, civic pageantry and spectacular aerial views of the region. The music is as before.

Westward Closedown (1981)

Roger Shaw signs off for the night and the clock fades into the main ident.
