I joined ia in 1980, the year
after I was introduced to my stoma. My ileostomy operation followed
around 3 years of suffering with ulcerative colitis.
I became a committee member of my local division (Norfolk &
Suffolk) a couple of years later, and with a financial background was soon
"volunteered" as local treasurer! I held this post for 13
years.
With an interest in the association at national level,
and with concern as to the general welfare of our members, I
was elected in 1995 as National Welfare Officer. I am
now in my sixth year carrying out this role. In this I provide
information about state benefits that may affect members, and I also
consider grant applications from members experiencing financial
difficulties as a result of their illness or surgery.
