Sutcombe Mill

This is the lower part of Sutcombe, in the valley beside
the River Waldon. At the centre of the drawing is the Mill,
which no longer runs, though the leat which powered it can
still be traced across the fields.

      The single span stone
      bridge over the Waldon
      is the entrance to the
      village from the South.

        Tithe Map of 1845
 There has been little change
  since 1845, the village
  remaining comparatively
  untouched by time, though
  new properties are gradually
  appearing.
  Several farmhouses have
  disappeared, without trace
  and several small cottages
are no longer to be seen.

The thatched cottages at Tucker's Hill,
adjacent to Sutcombe Mill were destroyed by fire,
as reported below in the newspaper of 21.06.1939.
These cottages are just visible on the photograph
of Millbrook on the Archive page. Residents were
named as the Sillifant and Hockin families.
 There are no longer any
 thatched houses in the
 village,though photographs
 still survive of at least
 two of them.
 These, and others, can be
 viewed on the Archive page.
