Below are photographs of some of the houses in Sutcombe,
taken at the end of 1999. The first photograph is of Sutcombe
Bridge, over the River Waldon, at the southern end of the
village. The Mill terrace, which is over 150 years old, is at the
bottom of the hill on the left, opposite the Mill House. This
is a former Mill and farmhouse, now in private occupation.
Other former farmhouses pictured are Matcott, and
Highbarrow, which is now derelict.
Millbrook, Hawkwill and Thuborough are working farms, and
Thuborough Mill is in the process of restoring the leat, and the
working machinery of the mill.
Chapel house farm was previously a thatched house, now
completely rebuilt. Church cottage which stands by the
Church gate, was originally thatched too, and photographs
of these, and others can be seen on the Archive page.
The six almshouses have been renovated, and are now a
row of three modern cottages.
The two Chapels pictured are the Bible Christian Chapel
at Sutcombe Mill, which is still in use, but Bethel is now
a private house. The Rectory has now been sold, and is in
private occupation.
