What and Why:-
A rescue dog is an animal that has been given a second chance by being re-homed, either after being found abandoned, or by going through one of the various rescue centres located throughout the country. Sadly a lot of rescue dogs come with a history of ill-treatment, which is very sad indeed. As an animal lover, cruelty to dogs, and indeed any animal that cannot, or in most cases won't defend themselves, is in my opinion one of the worst crimes anyone can commit. The worst part is that a lot of the time, people that commit these crimes get away with little or even no punishment and can go on to own pets in the future.
Within rescue homes there are dogs of all ages and all types looking for a second chance. Before finding a dog through a breeder or other source, give the rescue homes a chance to pair you up with a dog they have available for adoption.
A dog may have ended up in a rescue centre through no fault of it's own, e.g. the death of the owner, the owner moving country, an owner becoming disabled, or just the owner no longer feeling he/she can provide the care the animal needs. The worst reason a dog can end up in a rescue home is obviously when it has been the victim of a cruelty case. Anyone who has ever listened to some of the stories behind cruelty cases, told in rescue classes at dog shows, will no doubt have walked away with tears in their eyes as it is hard to believe that any human being can inflict pain and suffering on any creature, let alone these innocent dogs. For this reason alone, please give these dogs a chance to become part of a family. If anyone deserves it, they do.
Problem Dogs:-
Obviously, with any dog that has been abused, there will no doubt be some behaviour problems for you to overcome. It is common for rescue dogs to be destructive when left alone. Patience is really the key to correcting any behaviour problems, but there are plenty of experts available to give help and advice, and the home that you adopted the dog from should be able to offer you plenty of support too.
