This interview occurred over email with Johnny Dweeb, member of indie-pop sensations Dweeb on
Monday 7th April, 1997.
Thanks to him and to Kris and Lara from the band for the time and effort involved.
How did Dweeb get together? not sure, really. we all went to the same gigs and just sort of drifted into it.. How does it feel to be at the beginning of the long and winding pop road? feels like we're about halfway along it already, since you asked...whatever happens in pop, happens. it doesn't matter too much. Do you prefer recording or playing live? i prefer playing live, kris prefers recording, lara doesn't like either. Do you feel part of teen-c or some other genre, or are you above all that?
the words 'teen-c' were invented by bis and the media latched on to them
as something to describe a 'new breed' (i.e. about three) of 'young bands'
cos they don't know how to deal with things that aren't packaged neatly.
see also 'c96' for more bullshit. we are a pop band, pure and simple.
Any bands you feel a particular kinship with, or that you take inspiration from? kinship....um, silver sun particularly. they are quite similar to us in a
lot of ways, despite what ye might think...
What's been the highlight of your career so far? there's a few, i suppose... playing the reading festival was quite amazing, and the brats gig at the astoria in london. If you had to pick one song to cover, what would that be? 'turn to stone' by E.L.O. we're doing it! Would you rather be huge and split up after a year, or moderately successful and longer-lived? i'm not so bothered, but i think the first one is more likely. What's the Dweeb manifesto? there isn't one. that's the whole point! doh! Finally, what are Dweeb's plans for the rest of 97? finish the album, tour the album, burn the album
