Top 30 Singles of 1999

The 20th century is over and done with then...so what were the highlights of its last year? Here - in HeadCleaner's none too humble opinion - were the movers and shakers that made up the Class of 99. Contrary and contentious, perhaps (just wait til you get to the top ten...), but you know you love it really.

So, let's flick the switch and get things off to a start with numbers 30 - 21:

30 Geneva - Dollars In The HeavensDollars In The Heavens by Geneva
Geneva aimed skyward with this soaring epic, laced with Andrew Montgomery's divine vocals.
29 Let Forever Be by The Chemical Brothers
Whilst all around bowed down to the Fatboy, it was left to the Chems (with a little help from their friends) to remind us how it should be done.
28 Naomi - Be My LoverBe My Lover by Naomi
A startling offering from an artist that deserves to make the new millenium hers. Hear her roar.
27 Everything Must Flow by Suede
Suede's irresistible urban fantasies continued to waft out of 1999. This was the best 'un.
26 Alive by The Beastie Boys
Those bouncing beat-dropping boys hit home with this, a more serious, less surreal but just as vital track as ever.
25 Pick A Part That's New - StereophonicsPick A Part That's New by Stereophonics
As usual, a hit and miss year for Kelly and crew. For every earth-shaking classic, there were another couple of limping excuses for songs. This, however, saw the Phonics firing on all cylinders.
24 You Stole The Sun From My Heart by Manic Street Preachers
Likewise this fairly well-known Welsh trio. Although swamped by a bit of a backlash, the Manics were still capable of popping their heads above the battlements and firing off a gem of a song such as this.
23 Divine ComedyThe Pop Singer's Fear Of The Pollen Count by The Divine Comedy
Neil Hannon was the pop poet of the year, and his muse looks set to get stronger. Although a remaster of an oldie, this was still one of the most joyous and witty singles released this year.
22 At My Most Beautiful by REM
One of the finest and spine-tingliest love songs of the year. Proof that there's life in the old Stipe yet.
21 You Look So Fine by Garbage
Garbage had a critic-defying stellar year, but this chillingly eerie love / obsession hymn proved their finest moment yet.
