PINKERTON
by
WEEZER

Weezer's eponymously titled debut album sold millions of copies in the U.S. they became a household name, it even shifted a few copies over in the U.K. A plethora of descriptions however soon pigeon holed the band, 'geek-rock' 'power pop'. All accurate, but there is so much more to Weezer. This is proved by 'Pinkerton' which has a distinctly rougher tone than the previous album which offered tunes such as 'Buddy Holly.' It is interesting to note how the music press printed many photos of Weezer hanging out with Blur last summer. Then both bands coincidentally change style. The Blur album, as 'Pinkerton', featured no printed lyrics inside, both sport a photo of the respective bands in the studio. On "Pinkerton" Weezer lose none of their pop sensibilities, U.S. college radio will still play them.

'Tired Of Sex' is a track bemoaning the lack of love in the life of lead singer Rivers Cuomo, instead he is 'Making louise.' The track features some nice guitar work , and is very listenable. 'Getchoo' is a stomping, beast of a song during which weezer audibly exorcise the remains of 'geek rock.' This is a magnificent, angry song. Songs like 'across the sea' offer a distinct, personal touch from Cuomo. The song is about his correspondance between himself and a fan. Cuomo sings 'I have your letter, you have my song.' 'El Scorchio' which so shocked Weezer's small fan base in the U.K. when it was released, sank in the charts. Where was the 'Buddy holly 2' they all expected? This is still a great song, and indicates Weezer can do more than simple, guitar pop. 'Falling For You' is one of the best tracks, it starts melodiously with the relaxed tones of an oriental woman, then explodes into a scorching tune. Finally 'Butterfly' is the customary acoustic track. This is a charming, warm song. It is impossible not to be moved by the hushed vocals and strummed guitar. Cuomo reflects 'Everytime I pin down what I want it slips away, the goal slips away.' The track is based on the play 'Madam Butterfly' and continues the oriental theme. The front cover features a snowy, Chinese landscape.

With side projects galore (just see 'The Rentals') it is possible Weezer are growing apart. If they were to split it would be a shame. Weezer continue to write great songs. To the uninitiated, try 'Pinkerton' you just might like it!!
