Pet's Page

We've had quite a few pets over the years, and most of them we haven't done too well with. Please don't think I'm being heartless - its just that some of the stories are funny. We were very fond of all the pets we had.

Now then lets start with the 3 hamsters:

Hamedeus,

Hammy as he was amazingly called :-) died due to eating a big hole in one of our curtains. Apparently hamsters need special bedding as they have delicate stomachs. These curtains had been hanging before we moved into the house and I hate to think how old they were. Unfortunately they finished poor Hammy off.

Bibi,

Bibi had a relatively uneventful life - besides being chased by Holly, (see below in cats section), when she was in her ball. She gave as good as she got though and often bopped Holly on the nose as she rolled around.

John

John came to an unfortunate end. He was busily hibernating and we thought he was dead so chucked him in the bin. We only found out that he was hibernating the following day when he'd climbed to the top of the bin but had died due to the cold temperature. I was gutted - I felt really bad. I wanted to keep it a secret but my wife shared it with friends while we in a pub !!

We also had a rabbit for a short while, a lovely little Netherland Dwarf. Unfortunately she died because of some flu type disease going around which killed a lot of Rabbits at the time.

We've also had cats. The original cat we got was Holly. She is still with us and is about 11 years old now.

Holly had 3 kittens Poppy and Daisy went to live with my sister in law and we kept the third who we called Jess.

We also got a third cat a Tom called Ellwood. Now we also had some fancy fish. He decided he liked fish, and he did everything to try and get them. They survived two attacks complete with nibbled fins until they finally became a tasty snack one evening.

We eventually asked him to leave - well asked the Cats Protection League to take him as he was becoming wild and as our first child Poppy had been born, we didn't want him scratching her.

When we moved house, poor Jess couldn't cope with the stress. She mewed constantly and would mess everywhere. The CPL kindly took her too.

We still have Holly. She's getting on now and is the one pet we've been successful with !!!!

Ducks

Yes we've had / got ducks. One of my earliest memories was feeding the ducks in Tudor Grange Park in Solihull. I've always loved ducks and always wanted one for a pet.

My wife convinced me to try. Our first pair were Aylsbury ducks. They're the big fat white ones. Unfortunately a fox got the female, but the drake who we called Pudding survived 4 attacks. He was really tame and would meet me at the gate when I got home from work. He followed me everywhere. He eventually died I think he'd had more stress in his life than a whole family of ducks put together !!

We thought about getting some more and decided against it. Then one evening I was taken out by my wife and we met some friends called Steve and Heather and they had bought me a pair of Khaki Campbells. We called them

They were stolen though and I really wasn't going to get any more. However another friend had a neighbour who decided they wanted to get rid of their Khakis, so I had them. I called the Steve and Heather !!

We still have these too. Heather is faithfully giving us an egg a day. We've now got a decent fence and a strong lock up to keep them safe.
