About Lairg, Sutherland, in the Highlands of Scotland

How to get to Lairg:

By Train:  Scot-Rail run the Caledonian Sleeper from London Euston which arrives in Inverness in time for breakfast at The Royal Highland Hotel, Station Square (Tel: 01463 231926 - as well to book especially in the high season).  Trains connect to Lairg - the station is about  half a mile from the village - there is a mini bus to meet each train.

By Air: Dalcross Airport, 20  minutes' drive east of Inverness.  Inverness is about 1 hour 20 minutes drive from Lairg.  The Business and Retail park is on the left just before you reach Inverness - a good place to stock up with food and fuel.

By Road:
The drive to Lairg from Perth, Central Scotland has no cities or towns to negotiate - just take the A9 north from Perth. It is about 160 miles so allow three and a half to four hours for this journey, more if you stop off in Inverness. Along this road you will see some of the most magnificent scenery Britain has to offer. The House of Bruar (just after Blair Atholl) makes an interesting stop with high quality foods and goods for sale, and a restaurant with toilet facilities.  Another "comfort stop" further north is at Ralia, (well-signposted at Newtonmore) with café, tourist information and toilets.  Or just stretch your legs here and enjoy the wonderful scenery.

You can stop off in Inverness to get fuel and groceries (leave the A9 on the A96 in the direction of Aberdeen to reach the Business and Retail centre on the outskirts of Inverness).

Then continue north on the A9 over the Kessock Bridge, the Black Isle and the Cromarty Firth Bridge.  Continue north towards Wick, but go left at the B9176 junction (Skiach Service Station), signed to Bonar Bridge and Lairg and known as the Struie Road. Plan to stop for a few minutes at the "millionaire's viewpoint" over the Kyle of Sutherland.  Pass through Ardgay village and turn left at Bonar Bridge to Lairg.

The Centre of Lairg!
LAIRG (pop.around 800) is an ideal central base for making day trips to places all over Sutherland: to the rugged and beautiful wild scenery of the North and West coasts with isolated coves and fishing villages; to long beaches and several golf courses, including the Royal Dornoch, on the East coast.
Visit Dunrobin Castle, Dornoch Cathedral, Glenmorangie Distillery or Timespan in Helmsdale. The little local railway station is the place to start a trip on the beautiful North Line.
And a day trip to Orkney is easily done via the John O'Groats ferry.

For a memorable day-trip take the two-car ferry from Invergordon to Cromarty and then on to Chanonry Point on the Black Isle to see the only resident bottlenose dolphins in the North Sea in the Moray Firth.
There are nearby attractions too: the two lochs, Loch Shin stretching 18 miles across the country to the west coast, and Little Loch Shin by the village, offer fishing, sailing and other watersports. Neither will bird-watchers be disappointed by the Coloboll bird hide. By Little Loch Shin is the Ferrycroft interpretive visitors' centre, with many life-size wooden carvings of local fauna, a children's playground and an attractive "all abilities" walk.  Another enjoyable walk is at Gunn's wood just east of the village.
The river Shin flows down to the Kyle of Sutherland, passing over the Falls of Shin renowned for its leaping salmon, and where you will find a forest walk, play area, restaurant and "Harrods" gift shop.
The Kyle of Sutherland itself offers many attractions for the visitor; in Culrain, a tiny village and home to our sheepskin and deerskin tannery, is Carbisdale Castle with its intriguing history and now serving as a very popular Youth Hostel. Also here is another of the many beautiful forest walks in the area if you just want a relaxing walking holiday.
