The lambskins are washed four times, then pickled in strong acidic baths before being tanned with modern chrome preparations. They are then carded or brushed by machine and finished by hand to bring out the natural gloss and feel of the wool. In the big factory tanneries they are ironed, bleached, glazed and the wool is 'killed' with chemicals, sacrificing its natural beauty and thermal properties to mass production.
These lambskins may be washed as wool either by hand or washing machine, but must be dried by hanging
outdoors or by airing indoors in warm dry conditions.
Never tumble dry.
Alternatively, the wool side can be shampooed by hand and the lather rinsed out. The wool can then be towel-dried
and finished with a hair drier. In this method the leather is not repeatedly soaked and will therefore last considerably
longer.
The wool may be restored to its former beauty by use of a wire brush of the sort sold for brushing dogs' coats during
their moulting season.
