REVIEW
WET WET WET
Live At Hull Arena 14th December 1997
Well, the day I had been looking forward to for the last four weeks, finally arrived (and what a day it turned out to be!!)
Compared to somewhere like Sheffield, Hull Arena is quite small, so where ever you were sat you had a pretty decent view. The special guests were a band called "Junkster" who sounded too much like the "Cranberries" for my liking. So when they told us to enjoy the Wets and said goodnight, I wasn't too upset!!
At 8:45, the lights went down and the music started, screams and applause filled the Arena as everybody rose to their feet. Marti looked fantastic as he sang If I Never See You Again. After which Marti said "Good evening Hull" the crowd greeted him with even more screams and cheers. He told us it was their first time in Hull and he hoped everyone could understand him. This was followed by the first of my favourites to be sung Sweet Little Mystery. With A Little Help From My Friends Was the next song, Marti told us it was for Tommy, he went on to tell us Tommy was looking forward to Christmas and the Wets wished him well. My all time favourite Wets song was next Temptation (although I was a little disappointed that Marti didn't do the full version.) Followed by the brilliant Goodnight Girl with a Wets sing - a - long in between. The two Graemes also sang a few lines, to show us they were not there just to play the guitar! Neil chose to stay in the background this time.
Marti was in great form as he danced around the stage, knowing just how to get the audience going!! He was also very talkative, I liked this a lot, at the other concerts I have been to he hasn't said a great deal, so this was a real treat. Mind you what with his accent and the fact that every time he opened his mouth, the audience screamed and cheered, it was at times quite difficult to understand what he was saying!! Marti told us it was a nice change to be out on a Sunday evening, instead of watching the antiques road show!! (what he said next was too rude for me to tell you but it was greeted with great applause !!) Maybe I'm In Love and Beyond The Sea. The big band numbers taken from the album "10" went down well, as did Lonely Girl and Strange. Marti then told us about being asked to do a song for the Mr Bean movie, he then sat down to sing Yesterday. We were told Julia Says. was for all the Julia's out there ( why did I have to be called Kim?) We were treated to the oldies. Wishing I was Lucky, I Can Give You Everything, Sweet Surrender and Lip Service. From the album "Picture This" came Gypsy Girl. We were asked if anyone was married or in a relationship, he said if ever we had to say "sorry" this next song would be perfect. Don't Want To Forgive Me Now. All too suddenly, Marti was saying "Goodnight" and they all left the stage. The crowd went wild, clapping and cheering. They didn't leave us for too long before they were back and belted out, Angel Eyes and East Of The River. Then they were gone again. The noise was deafening and I'm sure could be heard from miles away, as people cheered, screamed and banged their feet on the floor, this time it seemed to take forever before they were back out. The noise got louder as they all re-appeared. Marti asked if we "fancied a bit of a disco" The usual screams and cheering followed as he sang, Ain't No Stopping Us Now. We all knew what was to come next and after Marti reminded us of Hugh Grant and a sports car!! we weren't disappointed when he sang, Love Is All Around. To which the audience sang along with. Then we knew it was really the end, when the rest of the band joined Marti at the front of the stage to take a bow. Marti then sang, We Wish You A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. His final words were to say goodnight and to wish us a safe journey home. Then they were gone.
The lights came back on and with the music still ringing in my ears and my hands sore from clapping, it was time to head for home. It was truly a brilliant concert and despite the departure of Tommy, the replacement drummer (who, I have just found out is called Steve... thanks to Gillian ) did a brilliant job. Now I eagerly await summer and hope that Wet Wet Wet will be doing a 1998 tour.
