JEWISH CEMETERIES OF THE EAST END

A. BETAHAYIM VELHO. The Old Sephardi Cemetery, behind 253 Mile End Road. The oldest in Britain, Opened 1657. Visiting by permission of the Sephardi Authorities, Lauderdale Road.
B. ALDERNEY ROAD. The oldest Ashkenazi Cemetery, opened 1696. Before that date Ashkenazim were buried in the Velho.

C. BETAHAYIM NUEVO. The New Sephardi Cemetery, opened 1725. Situated behind the Faculty of Laws building of Queen Mary and Westfield College in Mile End Road. Many of the graves were emptied and the bodies reburied when the college was extended. The remaining graves can be seen from the Staff Car Park behind the Arts building. Entry via Westfield Way. The original outer wall of the cemetery still runs along Mile End Road.
D. BRADY STREET. Ashkenazi Cemetery. Opened in 1761 by the New Synagogue.
E. BANCROFT ROAD. Cemetery of the Maiden Lane Synagogue, (Ashkenazi.) Graves visible from the road, but there are few stones still standing. A list of those buried there is in the Local History Library which also is in Bancroft Road.

*Bethnal Green Great Synagogue*	*Cannon Street Road Synagogue.*	*East London Synagogue.*

1. ** BETHNAL GREEN GREAT (Federation) 11-15 Bethnal Green Road. Now occupied by R.Halstuk Ltd. Fashion Fabrics Merchants. The stained Glass windows are still visible.
2. CANNON STREET ROAD SYNAGOGUE (Federation) 143 Cannon St. Rd. Now occupied by H. Fabian Ltd, selling dress trimmings. The surface at the front has been modernised, but the age of the building can be seen from the side walls.
3. ** EAST LONDON SYNAGOGUE. (United Synagogue) Rectory Square, a listed building, has been converted into flats and is now called Temple Court. If you can persuade one of the occupants to let you in, one can still see the surround to the Ark with the Ten Commandments, the stained glass window above it and there are a few inscribed stones on show.

4. 62 FIELDGATE STREET.This building was originally used as a Mission Hall, then as a synagogue and is now a community centre called LARC, which uses it for meetings, workshops, film screenings and a library. When it was a synagogue, the JFS (Jewish Free School) used to use it for extra classroom space. The staircase still has two handrails, the upper one for adults and the lower one for small children. This is not to be confused with 33 Fieldgate Street, which still holds regular services.
6. GLORY OF ISRAEL AND SONS OF KLATSK SYNAGOGUE. (Federation) 50a Hanbury Street. (Originally numbered fifty and a half). Now privately owned.
7. GREAT GARDEN STREET. (Federation, it was the site of their central offices) The Road is now called Greatorex Street and the building (No. 7.) is occupied by the Business Development Centre.

Harley Grove Synagogue. Machzike Adass Synagogue. New Road Synagogue.
8. ** MILE END & BOW SYNAGOGUE. (United Synagogue) Harley Grove. Was first a Congregationalist Chapel, then a Synagogue and is now a Sikh Gurdwara.
9. ** MACHZIKE ADASS. (Independent Orthodox, later Federation) Brick Lane and was also called Spitalfields Great Synagogue. It is now the Brick Lane Mosque, and is symbolic of the changing history of the East End. It was originally built as a Huguenot Church.
10. NEW ROAD SYNAGOGUE. (Federation) 113 New Road. Now the central part of Grate Fame, clothing wholesalers. A totally new front has been made to the building, but the old slate roof can just be seen peeping over the top.

11. ** PRINCELET STREET SYNAGOGUE. (Federation) 19 Princelet St, whose exterior looks like the other Huguenot houses of the area. Much of the internal structures still survive, including painted inscriptions and the chandeliers; but the building is now in need of extensive repairs and is closed to the public.
12. ** ST. GEORGE'S SETTLEMENT SYNAGOGUE, (Reform and Liberal) Henriques Street. Now converted into flats called Bernhard Baron House; but inscribed stones are visible by the front entrance.
13. SETTLES STREET SYNAGOGUE. (Federation) 34 Settles Street. Now a private house with multi-occupation.

Stepney Orthodox Synagogue. 17 Wilkes Street. Vine Court Synagogue.
14. STEPNEY ORTHODOX SYNAGOGUE. (Federation) 53, Stepney Green. Now called The Rosalind Green Hall and used by the Arbour Youth Amateur Boxing Club and Boys Club.
18. ** VINE COURT SYNAGOGUE. (Federation) 17/18 Vine Court. Now called Malhi House, and used for industrial purposes. Some of the ornate interior stonework can be seen from the outside through the first floor windows.
15. SONS OF WARSAW SYNAGOGUE. (Federation) 17 Wilkes Street. A tiny purpose-built synagogue stands in the back garden of this house, but is not visible from the road. The house was previously occupied by the Warsaw Lodge of the Grand Order of Israel and Shield of David Friendly Society, who built the Synagogue. It is now used as studio/workshop by a commercial artist. Although small, approximately 30 foot by 20 foot, it has a tiny balcony.
