The Main Event 2001

On the 28th January 2001, Liverpool Chinatown celebrated the beginning of the Year of the Snake. The main event attracted more than 23,000 visitors, making this event not only one of the largest events in the Liverpool City calendar but also the largest Chinese New Year celebrations in the UK.

The event was officially launched by the Deputy Mayor of Liverpool who, following a speech, fired off a 100ft length of traditional Chinese firecrackers in spectacular style to rapturous applause and cheers from the crowd.

Following this, there was an exciting and energetic performance from the Hung Keung Kung Fu Academy with a Lion and Dragon dance which then toured the Chinatown area bringing good luck and blessing businesses. Running simultaneously, the Chinatown Roadshow Stage provided the venue for performances from a local band, Sizerbarker, various local artistes and a prize competition.

The celebrations continued into the evening with the visitors enjoying the fun fair and sampling the delights of the fine restaurants in Liverpool Chinatown.

Liverpool Chinese New Year Week 2001

Chinese New Year Week

Due to the increasing numbers of visitors to Liverpool Chinatown, the Year of the Snake 2001 was the first year to see Chinese New Year Week - a whole 8 days of events, exhibitions, Chinese arts and culture which took place in and around Liverpool, starting with the Chinatown Sunday Street market and finishing with the Year of the Snake Main Event.
