Martin Clunes plays Craig NashLucy and Craig are sipping champagne by a open fire place. They kiss and Craig moves towards the bedroom. Before Lucy gets to the bedroom a mobile phone rings. She answers it and goes into a trance, suddenly she isn't in the mood anymore. She starts to take some of Craig's stuff, putting it into a bag. Craig comes out of the bedroom wondering where she is. He spots what she's doing, but before he can protest much she stabs him with two knives.

Meanwhile Marty Hopkirk is looking for a house on an incredibly long road. Houses stretch for miles in either direction. He's looking for another ghost, called Wyvern who lives in limbo. He walks up to the door of a house and the door opens by itself. Inside is nothing but vast blackness. He starts shouting "Hello" and eventually another ghost appears beside him. Wyvern tries to make him feel at home and changes the blackness to look like a living room - only it's like a flat painting cut into pieces and they all move slightly.

Jeff Randall is at the office. Felia, his secretary, shows in a new client called Three-piece (His real name is Percy, but he's the size of a three-piece suite, so his nick name is Three-piece). He's a security guard at a casino. He has a problem with one of the waitresses who he believe is stealing money from the till. He can't confront her himself, as he's attracted to her, and he just can't bring himself to do it. She doesn't know he exists and confronting her will ruin his chances to win her over. Jeff says they need to get someone in the casino, working under cover - he just needs some more details. Felia chooses this moment to go into labour! Jeannie arrives at Jeff's office as they are taking Felia to the hospital. Jeff asks Jeannie to look after Three-piece

Marty tries to get to grips with sitting on chairsMarty is still trying to get to grips with sitting on solid objects such as chairs etc. Wyvern tells him not to worry, he'll soon get the hang of it. The trick is, believing, after all none of it is real. They could just as well be somewhere else (The surroundings change to an airport runway as a plane takes off over Marty's head!). Or even somewhere other than that (The surroundings change again to shows them sitting on a stone bridge with a huge monster underneath with tentacles all over the place!). Wyvern thought the house effect would be more comfortable for Marty to deal with.

Wyvern then says Marty shouldn't be here, he should have gone upstairs. He was given a limited time on the mortal realm, but overstayed his welcome.

"I know. Daylight come and I couldn't go home," Marty quips. This is why Marty has been sent to Wyvern. Wyvern's job is to help ghosts who don't get to their grave in time. Wyvern gives Marty a cup of tea, but the cup passes through Marty's hand. Wyvern notes that Marty can only be seen by Jeff Randall, his old partner in the security services they ran together. However, Marty may also been seen by animals, children and Morons - people with innocent eyes. Marty asks what powers he actually has. Wyvern explains that ones power as a spectre is linked to the powers they had when they were alive. For example, "a great poet, in life, may have the power to speak unto others, in death," he explains. This being the case, Marty reckons he should have a lot of powers. He was a pretty good singer, could tap dance, snappy dresser, great lover, brilliant... "and a man who was full of hot air maybe able to create wind..?" Wyvern says.

At the hospital Felia is being rushed to the operating theatre, and there are complications with the birth of her baby. One doctor comments that they are loosing her. Marty appears at the hospital and is pacing up and down, while Jeff and Jeannie are sitting down waiting to hear from a doctor. In theatre, Felia goes flat line and Marty sees the spirit of her and her baby in the corridor. He goes over to her and tells her to go back, it isn't her time yet. They turn and head back towards her body.

Later we see Marty standing over Felia and her baby in a hospital bed. Jeff and Jeannie are looking in on them through a window outside the ward. A doctor approaches them, saying it was close, they almost lost her, but Felia's a fighter. Jeff moves away from teh window and Jeannie joins him. She asks if he's okay, and he replies, no he isn't. As Jeannie asks if she can help in any way, Marty appears beside her and Jeff asks him to leave. Jeannie thinks he's talking to her so she turns to go. Jeff apologises and asks her to stay. He then asks Marty to leave and points to him (from Jeannie's point of view, he's talking to thin air). Marty warns Jeff that Jeannie was his fiancée, so hands off!

Later we see Jeannie talking with her sister, Wendy. Wendy's glad that Jeannie is coping with Marty's death, but she still recommends a Dr. Lawyer whose supposed to be a great psychologist. He's got a great clinic out in the country, she could treat it as a holiday. Jeannie isn't mad though...but maybe Jeff is..?

Marty is back with Wyvern trying to levitate a china figure. He does it, but soon gets distracted and lets it fall and breaks on the floor. Wyvern gets a dustpan and brush to sweep up the remains, saying that they will make a poltergeist out of Marty yet.

At Marty's grave Jeff and Jeannie are talking. Jeff tells Jeannie that Marty is a ghost, and that only he can see him. Jeannie asks how he is, and Jeff says he's fine - he's dead - but he's fine. Jeannie clearly thinks Jeff is mad, and asks if he shouldn't be talking to someone of the medical variety.

Jeff and Jeannie are driving down to Dr. Lawyer's country clinic, called Trilby Park. Jeff asks if everything is set up at the casino. Jeannie replies that Three-piece has arranged for her to become a hostess there to see if Karen really is taking money from the till. Jeff complains that he should be at the casino, not this clinic. It's only for a week, Jeannie protests. She'll be okay at the office on her own, and let's face it - she needed a job. It's all worked out fine. Jeff says Marty would have been pleased, he promised Marty that he would look after her if anything happened to him. "Look after me!?" Jeannie says laughing.

As they walk up to the front door they meet some other patients of the clinic. One woman, Alice, says she comes back every year for a top up, it does her the world of good. Then they meet Dr. Lawyer who welcomes them to the clinic. Dr. lawyer tells him not to think of Trilby park as a hospital, rather treat it as a five star hotel for the mind. They reach Jeff's room, and Dr. Lawyer tells him to change into his Karma suit (a horrible peach concoction!), and he'll meet Jeff at 5pm for his first session.

As Jeff settles in and wonders what he's doing at Trilby Park, Marty appears. Jeff lies slightly saying it's a health farm, when Marty asks where they are. Jeff asks Marty to go haunt someone else, but he can't, only Jeff can see him. And, the further away from Jeff he gets the less powers he has. Jeff needs a rest, and he really doesn't want Marty around at the moment. But, has he ever considered that Marty might need him? As Jeff continues his conversation with Marty, we see Dr. Lawyer in his office watching Jeff via a remote camera hidden in the room.

At the casino, Three-piece shows Jeannie around and explains that he's been fixing the books with his own money to cover for Karen.

Back at Trilby Park, Jeff meets some of his fellow patients outside in the garden. Alice asks him to join her, but another - younger - woman called Lucy, claims he's spoken for and guides him to another table, where an older man, Cecil, is already sitting. Cecil warns Jeff to be careful, Lucy is in the clinic because she's a nymphomaniac. Cecil himself is a kleptomaniac, a bad one - he can never remember where he's put the things he nicked! A bell crimes once, and Cecil excuses himself. He has another session with Dr. Lawyer.

Cecil meets Dr. Lawyer elsewhere in the garden, out of site of the other patients. Dr. Lawyer says he believes Cecil has something for him. Cecil flusters a bit, not really knowing what he's talking about. Dr. Lawyer waves his hand in front of Cecil, putting him into a trance, and finally he understands. Cecil produces a delicate jewellery box, worth a fair bit of money, from his pocket and gives it to Dr. Lawyer. Dr Lawyer tells him he's done well...

Marty is once again back with Wyvern, who asks him he's been practising his mimicry. Marty says no, and Wyvern tells him he must keep up with his lessons, else he will become a weak and feeble ghost. Marty does a few impressions, but they are terrible!

Dr. Lawyer is talking to Marty, explaining that most people believe they see dead people in fire light or in pictures, in crowds etc. Jeff interrupts, saying that he isn't seeing Marty in firelight, he's a real person who he can talk to. But, we must start from the premise that that is impossible, says Dr. Lawyer. Jeff says he's not even sure he wants to stop believing that he's seeing Marty. And there in lies the problem says Dr Lawyer. He then asks if Jeff is a gambling man? He bets Jeff £100 that he'll be cured before the week is over.

Marty meanwhile is reciting a promise to improve his skills - in Wyvern's voice. He's sitting on Wyvern's knee like a ventriloquist's dummy. Wyvern admits it's cheating slightly - he threw his voice via a hand up Marty's back, but it's the effect Marty can have with just a little practice!

The chair Jeff sits in for his therapy session.Jeff is now sitting in a fancy reclining chair with a number of television screens around it. It's a relaxation chamber, and will lull Jeff into a state of half waking, half sleeping. Once it's turned on, the screen starts to swirl and shimmer with relaxing images. Jeff starts to relax, but then Dr. Lawyer shoots electric jolts through Jeff, causing him to scream and rise out of the chair. In turn, Marty who is still with Wyvern, feels a pain in his head.

Jeff is now in a trance, and Dr. Lawyer slaps him round the face, "Now listen you tosser. There are no such things as ghosts," he says. (so professional!). He then proceeds to convince Jeff that he loves Dr. Lawyer and Trilby Park, that he'd do anything for them. Upon waking Jeff is told he'll remember nothing, except the bit about ghosts.

At the casino, Jeannie chats with Karen in between waiting on tables. As they talk, Dr. Lawyer comes up to the bar and orders a drink. Jeannie asks Karen if she knows him. She says yes, he comes in a lot, used to win big as well, but not lately. She won't be getting any large tips from him.

Jeff is back in his room waking up after a bad nights sleep. Marty appears at his bedside asking him to wake up. He's bored and asks Jeff how long he has to stay at Trilby Park. Jeff doesn't reply, he just gets up and opens the curtains. Marty asks Jeff to stop ignoring him, and then shows him his new powers. He makes a glass of water wobble on a nearby table. Jeff still isn't acknowledging Marty's presence. Mary starts shouting in Jeff's ear and eventually Jeff tells him to stop shouting. He tells Marty that he doesn't exist, he's just a figment of his imagination. Then how did that glass of water float? It's not floating, says Jeff. Marty tries to make it float again, but Jeff grabs the glass and repeats that he's just imagining it and Marty because he feels upset and guilty that Marty died. Does he really feel guilty? Really, really? Yes okay! says Jeff, and asks Marty to leave so he can get dressed.

Later Jeff is outside talking to Lucy. She explains the she goes along fine, but then blacks out for whole days and wakes up with a desperate desire to return to Trilby Park. It's costing her a fortune, but it's worth it. Except for the headaches and the irrational violent outbursts, she's no longer a sex addict! She comments that Jeff is looking at her like he can't decide whether she's going to kiss him or rip out his heart. As they talk another patient playing crochet starts to shake violent and falls to the ground in a fit. Jeff goes to help but the woman stops him. Three man come along and hold the man down while one of them gives him an injection. Does it happens a lot? Jeff asks. She's seen it happen a couple of times before she says. The bell chimes three O'clock and she leaves for her session with Dr. Lawyer.

Marty asks Wyvern what happens if Jeff stops believing in him. Wyvern replies that he would become a restless wondering ghost. He'd begin to loose his substance, become a shriek, a cry on the wind. But enough of this, has Marty been keeping up with his lessons..? Marty....Marty...?

Jeff is walking round the pond in the garden when Marty appears. Marty asks what he's doing here, it isn't a health farm, it's a mental hospital. "Therapeutic Centre," Jeff corrects him. "It's a nut house!" Marty replies. What's he doing here, Jeff isn't crazy.

"I'm stood here now, talking to a dead man," Jeff replies.

"But I do exist," Marty insists. Jeff asks him to prove it, but Marty is fed up of trying to prove it and disappears.

"I'm sorry Marty," Jeff says to thin air.

Back in the relaxation chamber, Dr. Lawyer tells Jeff they can't expect results straight away, but a few more sessions should cure him. He asks if Jeff can see Marty now, he can't. Marty then appears and proceeds to make monkey faces at Dr. Lawyer. Jeff says that he can now see Marty. Dr Lawyer clearly doesn't believe him and so turns his machine on and tells Jeff to relax. Marty hangs around making faces and funny motions at Jeff even putting his whole arms through Dr Lawyer's face! Jeff tries to relax, listening to Dr Lawyer's voice, but finds it hard to stop smiling at Marty's antics. He's then hit with a strong electric jolt like before and shoots up in the chair screaming. Marty also screams and suddenly goes blurry and fades away.

At the casino Jeannie is getting ready for another evening at work. Karen comes in late. Jeannie comments that she can't wait for her day off, and asks Karen what she does on her days off. Not a lot, Karen admits she doesn't really have a life outside work anymore. Three-piece comes in and asks to speak to Jeannie. Karen looks disappointed...

Jeff - now safely in a trance - is being questioned by Dr Lawyer. He learns that Wendy, Jeannie's sister, is paying for his treatment here. She's obviously wealthy, as she can afford to send people here, but is she of any use to him? He asks who Jeannie is, and Jeff replies she is the woman he works with (he goes to say the woman he loves, but thinks better of it!). When asked what his job is, Jeff replies he's a private investigator. This immediately gets Dr Lawyer's attention, and he demands to know who hired him. But Jeff is looking at the screens, all he can see is Marty making faces at him, and he keeps repeating the word "ghost"...

Back at the casino, Jeannie sees Karen take £20 from the till and hide it down the front of her dress.

Jeff is now in bed staring at the ceiling. Marty is shouting his name and trying to fade in, but Jeff doesn't move, and so Marty fades out...could it be that Jeff no longer believes in ghosts...?

Meanwhile Dr Lawyer is in his office inspecting a watch from the jewellery box he got from Cecil earlier. There a knock on his door and Alice enters. He waves his hand putting her into a trance and gives her some keys. He has a job for her...

At the casino Jeannie is confronting Karen about the stealing. Karen is crying, mascara running all over the place. Karen admits the only reason she is stealing the money is to try and get Three-piece to notice her - he doesn't even know she's alive. She thought if he could catch her taking money from the till, he'd have to talk to her, notice she was there. Jeannie can't believe her luck!

Back at Trilby Park Jeff returns to his bed after another session. Marty tries to fade back in and succeeds this time. Jeff still isn't responding to him though and even walks through him on his way to lie down on the bed. Marty wonders out loud what they've done to Jeff, and fades out again.

Dr Lawyer is at the casino, continuing his loosing streak. A man approaches and whispers something in his ear. He looks worried. Elsewhere Karen and Three-piece are thanking Jeannie for bringing them together. Jeannie is then told she has a phone call, and Three-piece is told the boss wants him. Dr Lawyer is sitting in a booth opposite a man we can't see. He's being told that last time they spoke Dr lawyer owed the man £50,000. He thought he could win it back, but instead has got himself into deeper debt, he now owes £250,000! He tries to give him some jewels he's got his patients to steal, but they are thrown back in his face. What the man wants is Trilby Park. Dr Lawyer says no and tries to run, but Three-piece is there to stop him. No isn't a word he understands, and he tells Dr Lawyer some words he does understand, like "fracture"...

Jeannie is getting changed quickly, the phone call was from the cleaner saying she'd trapped something back at the office. Jeannie arrives and the cleaner explains what's happened. She managed to trap whatever it is in the inner office. But when she did, it went barmy trying to get out. As Jeannie looks in the window of the office Alice suddenly jumps up trying to get out. They open the door and let Alice out and she runs away quickly. The cleaner goes to give chase, but Jeannie tells her to let Alice go. They go inside to see the office in a complete mess. The cleaner asks how she got in anyway. Jeannie finds a set of keys...Jeff's keys.

Alice runs straight back to Dr Lawyer, who wants to know who Jeff is working for. She tells him that he was investigating someone at the casino. But all she can remember is fear and panic, she was trapped and couldn't get out. Dr Lawyer can't get anything coherent out of her, so he waves his hand sending her into a trance saying she will remember nothing...

Jeannie makes her way to Trilby Park to find Jeff. She walks into his room and finds Dr Lawyer there with a syringe planning to kill Jeff. She asks what's going on and goes over to Jeff who is lying on the bed. Dr Lawyer suggests she asks Jeff. He commands Jeff to wake up, and he slowly sits up in bed. Jeannie tries to get through to him, but Jeff will only respond to Dr Lawyer's voice. He tells Jeff to "deal with" Jeannie. This is much neater than him killing Jeff. Just think of it, a mentally unbalanced patient is startled in the night and kills the poor woman, and in a fit of grief hurls himself out the window.

As they speak, Marty is trying desperately to fade back in - he eventually manages it. Dr Lawyer leaves, telling Jeff he knows what he has to do, and locks the door. Jeff proceeds to try and strangle Jeannie. Marty tries to get through to Jeff by trying to mimic Dr Lawyer's voice. He can't seem to do it, but then he hears Wyvern's voice a là Obi-Wan Kenobi style telling him to "become" Dr. Lawyer. He finally manages it and tells Jeff to stop strangling Jeannie. Next we see Dr Lawyer outside the Jeff's room looking smug, but the smile is soon wiped off his face. Jeff punches through the door, opens it and walks towards Dr Lawyer. Marty tells Jeff to punch Dr Lawyer in the face. Dr Lawyer tries to regain the upper hand by saying Jeff must respond to his voice. Which he does - after Marty tells him to punch Dr Lawyer again!

(Dr. Lawyer turns his patients against Jeff and JeannieDr Lawyer refuses to be beaten and takes out a box and presses a button. The bell chimes and suddenly all the patients at Trilby Park wake up. He orders them to attack Jeff and Jeannie. Marty tries to tell them all to go back to bed, but no-one but Jeff can hear him. He decides to use the same trick that Wyvern used on him and puts his hand up Jeff's back. He projects his impression of Dr Lawyer through Jeff, and orders the patients to stop. Dr Lawyer panics. Marty continues to throw his voice and orders the patients to attack Dr Lawyer instead. Lucy reaches Dr Lawyer first and proceeds to kiss him while all the other patients beat him up.

Jeannie takes Jeff outside and tries to break him out of the trance by slapping his face - hard! Lucy and the other patients are making their way into the garden now. Marty decides to take advantage of the situation, and tells Jeff that when he says the word "eggbound" he will think that Marty is fantastic. Jeff wakes up just as Jeannie slaps him again.

Later Jeannie, Jeff, Karen and Three-piece are having a drink at the casino. Marty is making cute faces as Felia has brought her baby along for them all to see. She tells them that she's decided to call him Marty, and will be going back to Latvia to be with the father. Jeff wishes her well and turns back to Jeannie. If this experience has taught him anything, it's that he's not mad, he says. At least now he can stop pretending to see Marty, Jeannie says. Jeff agrees and then walks off with Marty. Marty says that it all worked out well "shortarse". Jeff protests saying that Marty isn't exactly an oil painting. "Eggbound," Marty replies. Jeff immediately thinks Marty is fantastic and "god like". He twigs to what Marty has done, but Marty keeps repeating the word "eggbound" and he can't do anything to stop himself. Jeff ends up screaming for Marty to stop!
