SOUTHWARK TALKING NEWSPAPER FOR THE BLIND - LONDON, UK

The Southwark Talking Newspaper began life in 1977. Its aim then, as it is now, is to provide news and information on audio cassette to those people living in the London Borough of Southwark who are unable to read ordinary newspapers because of visual impairment. Those who do not live in Southwark but had an interest in the area are also welcome to join.

ALL ABOUT THE SOUTHWARK TALKING NEWSPAPER

We are a UK registered charity (no 276885). Our primary function is to supply, free of charge, a news and information audio cassette. This is for blind and partially sighted people either living in, or with an interest in, the London borough of Southwark.

We send out a C90 cassette each fortnight. This is in two parts. Side one is a magazine. This is a collection of information and features including a nature trail, a recipe and a short story.. Side two is news. This is our team of volunteers reading items from the local press.

The cassettes are sent out every other Friday in special postal wallets. Each listener must send there cassette back in good time , in order that the next edition of the newspaper can be recorded for them. The cassettes go through the UK postal service free of charge under the "Articles for the Blind" scheme.

The Southwark Talking Newspaper Association is a charity. We are totally reliant on donations from our listeners and others to meet our modest running costs.

We have a small committee of listeners and other volunteers that meets every two months. The committee deals with any matters of concern regarding our operations and administration.
