JETS VOLLEYBALL CLUB
SPONSORSHIP PROPOSAL
AUGUST 1999
_____________________________________________________________________
1.0 Background
Volleyball is now a well established sport in the Island having started officially in the early 70's. The league is sponsored by the Insurance Corporation - a contract which started in 1990 and has been guaranteed till the year 2001. Last season (running 1998/99), 5 ladies teams and 3 mens teams competed in the main league. Some of these teams have long term sponsorship arrangements which are obviously proving a valuable investment for the sponsors, in terms of company awareness and promotion. A mixed league runs alongside the main league, attracting less experienced players. A total of 9 teams competed in this league including, for the first time, a mixed-media team which has undoubtedly helped boost the excellent profile volleyball now gets in the local media - including weekly reports in the JEP as well as match coverage on CTV’s Channel Report.
2.0 Benefits to the Sponsor
Depending on the level of sponsorship available, Jets feel that any/all of the following could be offered in return for a capital injection into their club:
·
Team name change to one that more suits the sponsor (the company name itself could be used if requested) - this would result in coverage on all Volleyball League Tables and results featured regularly in the sports section of the JEP and on Channel Report·
Sponsor's logo and company colours on all team strips·
Sponsor's logo to be incorporated on all Jets stationery. As a result the company would have a profile on:- All team press releases to local media
- All Jets correspondence (to team members and local Volleyball League members) - these mailings could also incorporate the sponsor's promotional literature
- Any other team promotional literature (i.e. to potential players)
·
A banner incorporating sponsor's logo and company colours which would be erected at all games and events where Jets were playing. Would also be featured in any team photos·
Help at Sponsor's events - e.g. the team could co-ordinate beach volleyball games to coincide with the sponsor’s social events·
General awareness at any Jets events - could wear clothing bearing sponsor's logo etc.
3.0 Outline Costings
Ideally we would be looking for a three year sponsorship contract. Jets are a very forward thinking club and the players are eager to develop. However, such development can only be assured with the security that sponsorship provides.
As can be seen below, there is a significant capital requirement which up until now has largely been met by team members. In order to attract strong players and become a leading club in the Volleyball League, Jets realise the need for capital assistance. Ideally, a sponsor would be able to meet us most of the way with costs. Realistically, however, we would consider sponsorship of an amount in the region of £1,500+ per annum. This amount would cover the club - in effect two teams because Jets enter both a mens and ladies team, offering the sponsor two bites at the media coverage cherry! The remaining costs would be met through fundraising and club members.

4.0 Background to Jets
Jets V.C was officially formed in July 1994 with a view to playing in the mixed summer league. Five years on, the club has been extremely successful in recruiting both experienced and new players to the sport. As a result, the club currently has 22 members (two teams - one ladies, one mens).
Both the ladies and mens teams have flourished. Over the last two seasons, the club are proud to have been awarded the following titles :
·
Winners of the Jersey Volleyball Association Knock-out cup 1997/8 (mens team)·
Most Improved Team 1997/8 and 1998/9 (ladies team)·
J.V.A. Ladies Most Improved Player of the Year (jointly won by Ellen Carroll and Sam Watts - both Jets players who played for the Island team for the first time in 1998)·
Five ladies and five men gained places in the Island volleyball teams in 1998 - competing in Leeds at the County Cup and in Guernsey for the 1998 and 1999 Inter-Insular matches. Three of the ladies were then reselected to compete in the 1999 Island Games, which took place this June in Gotland, Sweden.A number of members of the club were instrumental in the organisation of the highly successful 1999 Beach Volleyball Tournament. The event gained significant media exposure with live interviews and match reports being covered on radio (both BBC and Channel 103fm), CTV and in the JEP. Although these are Jersey Volleyball Association events, the main co-ordinators are members of Jets. They are therefore seen as the main contacts for any beach volleyball activity on the island.
The club took an active role at the recent Sport For All day. Club members also competed in the Jersey Volleyball Open and are planning a trip to Guernsey to compete in the mixed, mens and ladies tournaments at the Guernsey Volleyball Open in November.
The club is actively involved with the long term development of volleyball on the island and is represented on the Jersey Volleyball Association Executive Committee by:
Ellen Carroll - Vice President and Youth Development Officer
Chris Shield - League Secretary
Sam Watts - Press Officer
Finally, two members of the ladies team coach and play in the mixed team ‘White Knight Nads’. This is a mixed media team which, in its first season, won the Mixed League Knock-out Trophy and was awarded the shield for Most Spirited Team of the 1998/9 league. Being a mixed media team maintains great relations between Jets and the local media (it helps that one of the coaches is married to the News Editor of CTV!) and also ensures a gradual progression of players through to the more competitive ladies and mens leagues.
5.0 Aims and Ambitions
Although a relatively new club, Jets have a clear idea of how they wish to develop in the future. Specific objectives include:
·
Involvement in National League - exact details currently being investigated·
To attract more players to the sport·
Training - to implement a training programme which makes room for visiting coaches, can cater for both new and experienced players and is sufficiently demanding to ensure team progression·
Implement a support fund which will help finance team players who play for the Island. This is particularly important to support players in the run-up to the 2001 Island Games
6.0 Conclusion - Why sponsor Jets?
Volleyball is recognised as a key local sport by the Sport, Leisure and Recreation Committee and is being heavily supported to ensure its long term development. The local Volleyball scene is growing rapidly and is seen as a ‘fashionable’ sport to be associated with. To be linked with a successful club, which has strong ambitions to raise its profile locally, could only be beneficial to a sponsor.
The club is keen to build up a working relationship with its sponsor, clearly realising that sponsorship isn't a something-for-nothing arrangement. The list of benefits to the sponsor, detailed above, is not exhaustive. Jets would be quite willing to add to/alter the list to suit the sponsor's requirements.
