Jets V.C was officially formed in July 1994 with a view to playing in the mixed summer league. Five years on, the club has been extremely successful in recruiting both experienced and new players to the sport. As a result, the club currently has 22 members (two teams - one ladies, one mens).

Both the ladies and mens teams have flourished. Over the last two seasons, the club are proud to have been awarded the following titles :

· Winners of the Jersey Volleyball Association Knock-out cup 1997/8 (mens team)

· Most Improved Team 1997/8 and 1998/9 (ladies team)

· J.V.A. Ladies Most Improved Player of the Year (jointly won by Ellen Carroll and Sam Watts - both Jets players who played for the Island team for the first time in 1998)

· Five ladies and five men gained places in the Island volleyball teams in 1998 - competing in Leeds at the County Cup and in Guernsey for the 1998 and 1999 Inter-Insular matches. Three of the ladies were then reselected to compete in the 1999 Island Games, which took place this June in Gotland, Sweden.

A number of members of the club were instrumental in the organization of the highly successful 1999 Beach Volleyball Tournament. The event gained significant media exposure with live interviews and match reports being covered on radio (both BBC and Channel 103fm), CTV and in the JEP. Although these are Jersey Volleyball Association events, the main co-ordinators are members of Jets. They are therefore seen as the main contacts for any beach volleyball activity on the island.

The club took an active role at the recent Sport For All day. Club members also competed in the Jersey Volleyball Open and are planning a trip to Guernsey to compete in the mixed, mens and ladies tournaments at the Guernsey Volleyball Open in November.

The club is actively involved with the long term development of volleyball on the island and is represented on the Jersey Volleyball Association Executive Committee by:

Ellen Carroll - Vice President and Youth Development Officer

Chris Shield - League Secretary

Sam Watts - Press Officer

Finally, two members of the ladies team coach and play in the mixed team ‘White Knight Nads’. This is a mixed media team which, in its first season, won the Mixed League Knock-out Trophy and was awarded the shield for Most Spirited Team of the 1998/9 league. Being a mixed media team maintains great relations between Jets and the local media (it helps that one of the coaches is married to the News Editor of CTV!) and also ensures a gradual progression of players through to the more competitive ladies and mens leagues.

5.0 Aims and Ambitions

Although a relatively new club, Jets have a clear idea of how they wish to develop in the future. Specific objectives include:

· Involvement in National League - exact details currently being investigated

· To attract more players to the sport

· Training - to implement a training programme which makes room for visiting coaches, can cater for both new and experienced players and is sufficiently demanding to ensure team progression

· Implement a support fund which will help finance team players who play for the Island. This is particularly important to support players in the run-up to the 2001 Island Games
