What is Local Online? We are aiming to find local solutions to the problem of bridging the digital divide. As more services are provided online, people who are excluded from the Internet will face even more disadvantage.

Local Online plans to show that community groups, private firms and local government can work together to find exciting ways to make the Internet more accessible and build a stronger community.

We aim to target members of disadvantaged groups, and create more opportunities for life-long learning and for local business.

We plan to set up a UK Online Centre for the Oval and Stockwell area. The Centre will be not be based in a single building, but will offer Drop-in Sessions, Timetabled Sessions and Internet Access from Access Points, situated in and around the area.

Initially there will be between six and ten Access Points, but we hope to develop more. Some sessions will be free, others at low cost.

The Access Points will be managed by organisations with established expertise in providing internet access and dealing with the public, which will include:
  • Internet training centre
  • Cyber café
  • Estate-based ICT centre
  • Business centre
  • Organisations targeting special groups in the community
We expect the Local Online service to be available seven days a week, from 9am to 11pm (10pm on Sundays).
