Jean Charles de Menezes |
Police forced him to the floor and shot him seven times in the head and once in the shoulder. On behalf of the people of Stockwell we want to offer deepest condolences to Jean's family and friends. Londoners need good fair policing and Community Support, which runs Local Online Oval and Stockwell, will support attempts to achieve this. However, on the basis of the known information it appears that this death was avoidable - and that the police officers concerned may have been reckless, poorly trained or given inappropriate orders. We say that the Metropolitan Police must be made fully accountable to the Greater London Assembly. We want progress on the recommendations of the Mcpherson Report. A second important issue is: how do we welcome and protect people who come to this country - whether to work or as asylum seekers. How can we help people get a greater understanding of why young Brazilians come to work in London. There is a shrine outside Stockwell tube station where you can leave flowers and messages. A vigil is held here each Friday at 7pm. A tribute has been added to the Stockwell Memorial mural. It was damaged on 10 September and then restored - see Menezes tribute now restored. Around 18th November it was damaged again - this time it was completely obliterated in an act of vandalism by Lamheth Council. If you have ideas for ways in which Londoners and others can help to prevent more incidents of this kind, please contact us. |
