Isle of Man Sublittoral Survey II

An underwater biological survey by SCUBA divers on an area of seabed rich in the coralline algae species collectively known as 'maerl'

17th - 25th June 2000

Point of Ayre, Isle of Man, UK

Welcome to the homepage of the Isle of Man Sublittoral Survey, run by the Port Erin Marine Biologists Sub Aqua Club (PEMBSAC from now on!). This site is under development and will be more or less continuously changing!

Maerl is a coralline marine alga which, while pretty boring in itself (although others may think differently!), has the capability to transform an extremely boring sand seabed into a thriving, biologically rich habitat.

Maerl has been located by a previous survey off the north east coast of the Isle of Man, and we intend to return to the site and conduct a full biological survey, recording as many species as we are able.

If you would like to join us then please contact me, especially if you have some mates and a boat! Marine biological knowledge would be an advantage, but is not essential.
