..... Canada ..... the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire was born at the instigation of  MARGARET POLSON MURRAY. It called for patriotism, loyalty and service. Chapters soon sprang up in other countries - New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Bermuda , The Bahamas and India. The function of the Order was to raise money - 10,000 dollars sent a hospital ship out to South Africa during the Boer War, a science block was built for St. Helena's School at Poona and equipment was supplied and wages paid to staff at the Canadian Hospital at Nasjk. ' Comfort parcels' went out regularly to the men fighting in the Boer war and subsequently to those in the Great War. When the wars were over the Daughters of the Empire tended the war graves. An annual report was published showing where the money that had been raised had gone - hospitals, schools, homes for disabled soldiers
