He was born in New York and studied at Harvard. In his twenties he worked as a cowboy on a ranch in the Dakota territory after going west in order to get over the grief of losing both his wife and his mother on the same day. He was also the FIRST American President to ride in an automobile, a plane and a submarine and was the FIRST American to win a Nobel Peace Prize which was for mediating the treaty that ended the Russo-Japanese War. He was also the FIRST President to sit down to dinner with an African-American at the White House when the black intellectual Booker T Washington was his guest
