1844 ….. U.K ..... William Lockett was appointed the FIRST Mayor of Salford

1900 ..... U.S.A ..... the world’s FIRST book of stamps was issued in the US

1912 .....U.K ..... American aviator and journalist,  Harriet Quimby, became the FIRST woman to fly across the English Channel when she took off from Deal in a Bleriot monoplane  

1926 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST book-of-the-month selection was made. The idea was dreamed up by an American and the FIRST choice was Lolly Willowes or The Loving Huntsman by Sylvia Townshend. 4750 club members received a copy

1954 ..... U.K .....  stock car racing FIRST came to Britain when ‘Digger’ Pugh, an Australian entrepreneur introduced it to the Old Kent Road Stadium, London. 26,000 spectators packed the stands and watched the old American cars, brightly painted, batter each over 20 laps. Le Chevalier d’Orgeix, a French Equestrian, won the final race after driving half a lap backwards. No-one was hurt but 7 cars were total write-offs

1964 ..... U.K ..... Geraldine Mock completed the FIRST solo round-the-world flight by a woman

1997..... U.K .....  the FIRST ever DNA data base for birds was launched in order to deter thieves from stealing valuable eggs

1998 ….. U.S.A .....  Meryl Streep became the winner of the FIRST Bette Davis Lifetime Achievement Award
