1943 ….. U.S.A ..... the FIRST woman licensed to ride a horse as a professional jockey was English born Judy Johnson who made her debut in a steeplechase at Baltimore on this day. Her first application to the Maryland Jockey Club for a licence in 1927 had been turned down on the grounds that no woman had previously been issued with one but on a later application she was successful
