1860 ..... U.S.A ..... Johnny Fry carried the FIRST Pony Express mail delivery on the first leg of its journey from St Joseph to San Francisco. The following day James Randall left San Francisco on the second leg of the journey, on horseback first and then by steamboat, and handed the mail on to William (Sam) Hamilton in Sacramento. There were 157 relay stations between St Joseph and San Francisco and eighty riders were employed at any one time to carry the mail between them, forty riders in each direction. In 1861 the Pony Express closed down after only 18 months with an estimated loss of $200,000
