1893 ..... FRANCE ..... the world’s FIRST car registration plates were introduced in France 

1908 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST international beauty contest in Britain was held in Folkestone at the Pier Hippodrome. Competitors came from England, Ireland, Austria, France and America and there were also a number of fisher girls from Boulogne who had crossed the Channel independently from the official French party. Nellie Jarman of England was the winner

1909 ..... U.K ..... Leila Cody, wife of the American showman and inventor ‘Colonel’ Samuel Franklin Cody became the FIRST woman passenger on an aeroplane in Britain. On the same day Colonel J E Capper RE was the FIRST aeroplane passenger to fly in Britain when he was taken by Col Cody on a two mile flight over Laffan's Plain

1938 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST feature film shown in a scheduled television service in Britain was The Student of Prague which starred Anton Wallbrook and Dorothea Wieck 

1960 ..... U.S.A ..... the FIRST oral contraceptive was marketed by the American Searle drug company

1972 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST ‘Adventure Playground’ in the north of England, opened at Elton Street, Lower Broughton, Salford
