1762 ..... U.S.A ..... Ann Smith Franklin became the FIRST ever female editor and publisher of an American newspaper when appointed to the Newport Mercury

1846 ..... U.K ..... Philips Park, Clayton, Manchester (UK) was established from funds raised by public subscription and was the FIRST municipal park in the world intended for free use by the public

1871 ..... SWITZERLAND ..... Lucy Walker became the FIRST woman to climb the Matterhorn. Previous to this she had made the FIRST female ascent of the Weisshorn and Lyskamm. She usually climbed in a white print dress and enjoyed cake and champagne while doing so. She was one of the FIRST members of the Ladies Alpine Club, founded in 1907, and in 1912, at the age of 76, became its second president 

1911 ..... RUSSIA ..... Lidia Zvereva became the FIRST Russian woman to get a fixed-wing pilot's licence when she received licence number 31 at the Russian Aviation Association Flying School at Gatchina

1914 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST British aircraft shot down in warfare was an Avro of No 5 Squadron RFC. It crashed near Mons after being hit by ground fire. The crew, Lts V Waterfall and C G G Bailey were the FIRST British fliers to be killed in action

1932 ..... U.K ..... the BBC FIRST began its regular television service from Broadcasting House. Four half hour programmes were put out each week with transmissions starting at 11 pm. After the war when television transmissions were resumed, the FIRST combined television and radio licences were issued at £2.00. It was estimated that there were 7,500 television sets in the country 

1933 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST boxing match was televised in Britain 

1938 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST automatic car was tested in the UK 

1943 ..... FRANCE ..... Yvonne Cormeau, widow of an Englishman killed in the Blitz, became the FIRST woman radar operator to be parachuted into France by the British 

1964 ..... U.K .....  the FIRST edition of BBC's Match of the Day was screened with highlights of the match between Arsenal and Liverpool 

1991 ..... U.K ..... Commander Sally Hubbard became the FIRST woman to be appointed Assistant Inspector of Constabulary
