..... U.K ..... Queen Anne FIRST gave racing at Ascot 'Royal' status when she founded the course on this day1926
..... U.K ..... the FIRST British Grand Prix was held at Brooklands, Weybridge. The race was won by Louis Wagner and Robert Senechal in 4hrs 56 secs with competitors driving 110 laps around the 2 3/4 mile-long track. The last race was Brooklands was run in 1939 and the winner, Raymond Mays, later recalled how the track was so bumpy ' we used to wear a tummy belt to hold our guts together, but we still ended the race black and blue with bruises'. ..... U.K ..... the Litter Act FIRST came into force in London as part of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. Offenders could be fined up to £10 for dropping litter. In the first year nearly 1000 litter louts were prosecuted. It was estimated that in Manchester, street sweepers were having to pick up 1,050,000 pieces of discarded paper, wrappings and refuse each day while in London an annual average of £3,000 per mile was spent on keeping the streets tidy1987 .....
