Coram- Thomas ..... born c1668 died 1751 ..... English philanthropist who was a shipwright by trade. In March 1741, after seventeen years of campaigning, he was responsible for the FIRST foundling hospital to be built in London and on the first night thirty children were admitted. The hospital also became Britain's FIRST public art gallery when artists of the day exhibited there. By 1760 six more foundling hospitals had opened in the country. The London hospital finally closed in 1954. One of the foundlings, Julian Mariner, was the FIRST one to reach an exalted position there when he returned as apothecary and in 1828 was elected a governor
