1884 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST edition A-Ant of the Oxford English Dictionary was published. James Murray was its most famous editor but he had only reached the letter T after working 44 hours per week for 35 years. Hundreds of people sent in contributions. The final volume appeared after the death of James Murray in 1928

1890 ..... U.K ..... the National Union of Paper Mill Workers, a new union for the papermaking industry, was FIRST set up in Edinburgh and was open to everyone working in the mills. It's leader was William Ross who set up an office in his own house in Manchester and was the only officer of the union

1893 ..... U.S.A ..... the FIRST film studio in the world was completed at the Edison Laboratories in West Orange, New Jersey. Using his Kinetoscope, Edison made short vaudeville act films 

1910 ..... U.K ..... under a new act the FIRST 80 labour exchanges opened in England and were soon inundated with job hunters 

1929 ..... U.S.A ..... MGM’s Broadway Melody, the FIRST musical film, was shown for the FIRST time in Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. It starred Bessie Love who won an Oscar nomination and the film won the second Academy Award for Best Picture 

1930 ..... U.K ..... The Times crossword was published for the FIRST time 

1940 ..... U.K ..... Captain Marvel FIRST appeared in Whiz comics 

1956 ….. U.K ..... Eccles and District History Society held its FIRST meeting. The FIRST chairman was Alderman G K Edwards ..... and …..  the FIRST composer to be commissioned to write an original opera for BBC television was Arthur Benjamin, whose one-act opera Manana, with text by Caryl Brahms, was transmitted on this day 

1973 ..... U.K. ..... women were allowed on to the Stock Exchange floor in London for the FIRST time

1979 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST British footballer to be the subject of a seven-figure transfer fee was Trevor Francis when Brian Clough paid Birmingham £1m for him for Nottingham Forest
