1919 ..... U.K ..... passengers flew between London and Paris for the FIRST time. The flight took 3 hours 30 mins and the Farman F60 Goliath airplane flew at a speed of 97 mph. All the passengers were military as there was still a ban on civilians flying at this time 

1940 ..... U.K .....“Starlighting” the Government approved system system of street lighting had its FIRST public lights in Salford in Chapel Street and it was decided to install the system on all bus routes in the city. The lights were designed so that they could not be seen from an aeroplane flying normal bombing height. However due to lack of funds it was postponed at one stage but nevertheless the FIRST stage was completed by the end of the year

1964 ..... U.S.A ..... The Beatles FIRST appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in America 

1967..... U.K ..... a Russian leader dined at Buckingham Palace for the FIRST time since the reign of the Tsars when Alexander Kosygin called on the Queen. During his stay in London the Premier had an entire floor at Claridge’s at his disposal 

1996 ..... U.K ..... the Royal Bank of Scotland opened the FIRST English mortgage shop, in which trained staff were able to deal with customers’ enquiries on mortgages, savings and investments 

1997 ..... U.K ..... Lord Irvine of Lairg became the FIRST occupant of the Woolsack in living memory to appoint a special adviser of the type who helps to keep his Cabinet colleagues from delusions of grandeur when Garry Hart was appointed

2001….. U.K ..... Lance Corporal Roberta Winterton became the FIRST serving soldier to pose topless on Page Three of The Sun newspaper
