1893 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST meeting of the Independent Labour Party took place. It dominated the Labour Party until 1914. The last Independent Labour Party MP joined the Labour Party in 1948 

1908 ..... U.K ..... Henry Farman won the £5000 prize for the FIRST heavier-than-air aircraft flight to cover a circuit of at least 1 kilometre. The event was heralded as proof that the new aircraft would eventually replace steerable balloons as air travel 

1917 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST Service flier in Britain to make a parachute descent was Capt C F Collett, RFC, when he made an experimental jump from a height of 600 feet using a Calthrop 'Guardian Angel'

1921 ..... U.K ..... windscreen wipers were introduced for the FIRST time when the patent was registered by Mills Munitions of Birmingham  

1942 ..... GERMANY ..... the pilot of an experimental jet fighter became the FIRST to leave his plane via an emergency ejector seat. Major Schenk ejected at 7,875 feet and made a safe landing when his plane crashed due to heavy icing

1964 ..... U.S.A ..... a reluctant Capitol Records released the FIRST Beatles record in America. I Wanna Hold Your Hand became their fastest selling single with 1m copies being sold in the FIRST 3 weeks
