1858 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST weekly concert by the Charles Halle orchestra, Britain’s FIRST permanent professional orchestra, took place at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester 

1892 ..... U.S.A ..... the FIRST game of basketball was played in Massachusetts at the YMCA college in Springfield. James Naismith is regarded as the originator of the game which was originally designed to bridge the gap between the baseball and American football season. It soon became popular in its own right

1981 ..... U.S.A ..... Ronald Reagan became the 40th President of the USA and the FIRST to take the oath of office facing the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial 

1989 ..... U.S.A ..... as President Reagan of the USA turned over his office to George Herbert Walker Bush, he became the FIRST man in 60 years to turn over to a successor of his own party. He was also the FIRST to complete his terms of office unburdened by defeat and was the most popular President of the post war era 

1996 ..... U.S.A ..... American Steve Fosset became the FIRST man to stay up in a balloon for the longest time and added more than 4000 miles to the distance record. He took off from Missouri 145 hours earlier and easily eclipsed his own world distance record of 5,435 miles before he was eventually forced down by lack of fuel after being hampered by thunder storms and delays in gaining permission to cross Libyan airspace
