1924 ..... U.K ..... Britain’s FIRST Labour Government was appointed under James Ramsay MacDonald 

1947 ..... U.S.A ..... the FIRST commercial television station west of the Mississippi opened and their FIRST commercial was for a dog food 

1955 ..... U.K ..... Joe Davis recorded the FIRST official maximum break of 147 but it took 2 years for it be to ratified by the Billiards Association & Control Council 

1975 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST charity stamp was issued.  It was the brainwave of Tom Major who was the caretaker of flats  in Hove near Brighton. After watching a television programme about the handicapped he set about raising money in various ways but it was quite a dew ideas before his idea for the stamp was accepted 

1992 ..... U.K ..... Rebecca Ridgway became the FIRST woman to row around Cape Horn in a canoe. The expedition began on January 8th in Chile and the 200 mile expedition through the Beagle Channel to Cape Horn Island was directed by her father, ex-transatlantic rower John Ridgway

1994 ..... U.K ..... the Catholic Cardinal Cahal Daly became the FIRST Irish bishop from his church to preach at Canterbury Cathedral since 1517
