1788 ..... AUSTRALIA ..... the FIRST Australian penal colony was founded at Botany Bay 

1896 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST motorist was convicted of speeding. Walter Arnold was accused of breaking the 2mph speed limit with a speed of 8mph as he passed the house of the local policeman. The constable gave chase on his bicycle and after a 5 mile chase Mr Arnold was arrested. He was fined one shilling for his offence 

1928 ..... U.S.A ..... Dorothea Klumpke Roberts became the FIRST woman member of the Eastbay Astronomical Society - Oakland, California

1935 ..... ICELAND ..... the FIRST country to introduce legalised abortion on medico social grounds  under Law No.38. The USSR was the FIRST country to legalise abortion which in effect was on demand but physicians were ordered to discourage patients from having an abortion particularly in the case of  first pregnancies  

1947..... U.K ..... Tania, the daughter of Violette Szabo, heroine of WW2 received the George Cross from King George on behalf of her mother who was the FIRST British woman to be awarded the George Cross posthumously 

1956 ..... U.S.A ..... Elvis Presley made his FIRST national television appearance on the Dorsey Bros "Stage Show". He appeared on the same show a further five times

1994 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST women-only boxing tournament was held at the Marine Halls, Fleetwood and  Diane Berry became the FIRST British super-flyweight women’s champion
