1885 ..... U.S.A ..... the FIRST appendix operation was performed by Dr William West Grant in Davenport, Iowa, on Mary Gartside, a 22 year old farm girl. She made a complete recovery and lived until 1919

1891 ..... U.K ..... Dame Mary Rosalind Paget (1855-1948) became the FIRST Queen’s Nurse 

1936 ..... U.S.A ..... the FIRST Pop Music Chart based on record sales was published in The Billboard (New York)

1938 ..... U.K ..... the circus was FIRST televised when the Bertram Mills’ Circus was transmitted live from Olympia. It was also the FIRST time that pictures were shown of the paying public at any event 

1951 ..... U.K ..... Frankie Howerd began his FIRST series on radio - Fine Goings On - starring with Marjorie Holmes and a young Norman Wisdom. Scriptwriters were Sid Colin and Eric Sykes and Janet Hamilton Smith and John Hargreaves sang romantic duets 

1972 ..... U.K ..... Rose Heilbron made legal history when she became the FIRST woman judge to sit at the Old Bailey 

1982 ..... U.K ..... Erika Rowe became the FIRST sports 'streaker' when she ran across the ground at the England v Australia rugby match waving her bra in the air
