1865 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST match by Lancashire Cricket Club at Old Trafford took place. The match was against Middlesex and Lancashire lost by 62 

1951 ..... Randolph Turpin became the FIRST Briton to win the world middle weight title in the 20th century when he beat Sugar Ray Robinson 

1958 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST parking meters came into operation in Mayfair in London. There were 625 of them and cost 6d an hour with a fixed penalty of £2.00. Three years later, 12000 meters had been installed around the country. One third of those motorists who had been issued with parking tickets when reluctant to use the meters had to be prosecuted for failing to pay their fines 

1962 ..... U.S.A ..... space television FIRST began when Telstar 1 was launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida, The 170 lb communications satellite was designed to relay signals between America and Europe. Seconds after 1 am the shadowy image of the chairman of the American Telephone Company, which owned the satellite, flickered onto television screens in Britain. This FIRST transatlantic transmission lasted less than one minute 

1992 ..... POLAND ..... Miss Hanna Suchocka, aged 46, became Poland’s FIRST woman Prime Minister when the Sejm (Lower House) voted 233-61 in her favour with 113 abstentions. She was their 5th Prime Minister in 3 years, was a member of the Democratic Union and an anti-abortionist 

1997 ..... U.K ..... Southwark became the FIRST Anglican diocese formally to adopt the practise of admitting children to Communion before Confirmation, which is common procedure in the Roman Catholic Church
