1865 ..... FRANCE ..... the world’s FIRST 4-wheeled petrol car to run on pneumatic tyres was driven by the Michelin brothers who set off to win the Paris-Bordeaux race. The Peugeot car was named L’Eclair 

1910 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST British victim to die in an aircraft was the Hon. Charles Stewart Rolls when his plane crashed during a flying competition at Bournemouth. He was a distinguished aviator and in the previous month became the FIRST person to fly both ways across the Channel without stopping. He was also a renowned pioneer motorist and a partner in the Rolls-Royce car manufacturing company 

1939 ..... U.K ..... It’s That Man Again or ITMA as it was popularly known was heard for the FIRST time on radio. The show starred Tommy Handley and it became the most famous and popular comedy series of all time.  The first series was not a great hit but once the war began it shot to the top.  Tommy Handley died three days after the broadcast of show number 310 ( January 1949) 

1954 ..... U.S.A ..... Scotty Moore became Elvis Presley's FIRST manager when he signed a one-year contract with him

1984 ..... U.S.A ..... Geraldine Ferraro became the FIRST woman ever chosen to run for Vice-President when Walter Mondale, the Democratic presidential candidate, chose her as his vice-presidential running mate 

1989 ..... Judy Leden became the FIRST woman to cross the English Channel by hang glider. She was launched from a hot air balloon 13,500 ft above Dover and completed the flight in less than 30 minutes 

1997 ..... U.K ..... a woman of 22 had a hole in the heart repaired by keyhole surgery, the FIRST such operation in Britain, although it had been conducted in the past  to replace valves and unblock arteries but this was the first time a hole had been repaired
