1865 ..... the FIRST man to climb the Matterhorn was Englishman Edward Whymper. On his second attempt he reached the summit at 1 pm after climbing with 3 English companions and 3 local guides. As they made their way down Douglas Hadow, aged 19, slipped and dragged 2 English climbers and a guide after him. The rope snapped and they plunged to their deaths down a 4,000 ft precipice

1930 ..... the FIRST World Cup was played in Uruguay. In the barely completed brand-new stadium in Montevideo Uruguay beat Argentina 4 - 2. Uruguay had twice been Olympic football champions and the sport was a national passion. Despite promises from the Uruguayan government to pay all the expenses of the teams which took part, attendance was poor. Just 13 countries entered and the only European nations represented were Belgium, France, Romania and Yugoslavia
