1877 ..... U.K ..... the FIRST telephone line between two separate buildings was laid from the Queen's Theatre, London to Canterbury Hall for a demonstration

1868 ..... the FIRST tape measure was patented by Alvin J Fellows. It was coiled in a round tin with a spring lock to fix it in any position 

1900 ..... the FIRST woman to win a motor car race was Miss Wemblyn who drove her 6 hp Parisian Daimler to win over 3 other entrants in a special Ladies Race held at Ranelagh 

1916 ..... U.S.A ..... the FIRST black feature film was premiered at Jersey City. The Coloured American Winning his Suit starred an all-black cast 

1930 ….. U.K ..... the BBC screened the FIRST play on its fledgling television service. The Man With a Flower in His Mouth starred three people. Special make-up was used to emphasise faces which would otherwise have been difficult to see in the black and white transmission. Cheeks and foreheads were daubed with yellow, while other features were accentuated with thick blue lines. There was not much in the way of scenery and props were held up and used in close-up to add variety
