1940 ….. U.K ..... Daphne Pearson was awarded the Empire Gallantry Medal making her the FIRST woman to receive a gallantry award in WW2. In 1941 this was converted into a George Cross 

1954 ..... U.S.A ..... at 9.00 am 15-year-old Eldene Beard was the FIRST in line when Charles Records on Main Street, Memphis, opened, in order to buy Elvis Presley's first commercial record That's All Right (Mama)

1961 ..... U.S.A ..... the FIRST airline to introduce regular in-flight movies was TWA. By Love Possessed starred Lana Turner and Efrem Zimbalist Jnr and was shown in the First-class section on the New York to L A route 

1969 ..... Englishman John Fairfax became the FIRST man to row solo across the Atlantic when he arrived on Hollywood beach, Florida. He left the Canary Islands on January 20th in a 24’ rowing boat and after 180 days and 4000 miles he finished his journey. Three years later with his girl friend he rowed the 8000 miles from San Francisco to the Hayman Islands off the Queensland Coast 

1979 ..... PORTUGAL .....  Maria Pintassilgo became the FIRST woman Prime Minister in Portugal 

1984 ..... U.K .....  Lynn Rippelmeyer became the FIRST female to captain a 747 jet across the Atlantic

1996 ..... U.S.A ..... the Olympic games held in Atlanta were the FIRST in the 100 year history of the event to gather every nation on earth together - 197 delegations. It was also the FIRST time that the games had been held in a city where most of the residents were black
